Contemporary Painting and Sculpture

The timeless element in contemporary art is essential to work featured at Addington Gallery. In a media saturated world, fine art is unique because of its lasting quality, a quality that reflects the time that has gone into the idea, concept and process of creating the art. At Addington Gallery, these qualities manifest themselves in a variety of styles of painting and sculpture, be it representational, abstract, or a combination of various forms of expression. The strength of the idea, its execution and its originality are the signposts that the gallery looks for in the art that it represents.

Gallery History

Addington Gallery was originally founded in 1988 as Gwenda Jay Gallery. In 1981 founder Gwenda Jay moved to Chicago and became one of River North’s pioneers as co-owner of Klein Gallery before opening her own space on Superior Street in 1988. Dan Addington’s earliest association with the gallery began in 1993 as a represented artist. In addition to exhibiting his own art nationally, he worked as curator, assistant director, and director of various galleries in Chicago. In 1996, Dan became the Director of Gwenda Jay Gallery, and the gallery moved to it's present location on Wells St. In 1999 Addington became co-owner of the gallery, and in 2007, he became sole owner and it's name officially changed to Addington Gallery. Dan exhibits his work around the country in numerous one person and group exhibitions, teaches workshops, juries competitions, and frequently speaks to groups and classes about his experiences as both artist and gallery own

Art Not Terminal Galleryimg

North America, USA, WA, Seattle, Downtown, 2045 Westlake Avenue, Seattle, WA, 98121

About Us

Art/Not Terminal Gallery (also known as A/NT Gallery) is a Seattle artists' collective founded in October 1988. It became a Washington State not-for-profit corporation in July 1989, and is currently pursuing tax-exempt status to become a 501(c)(3) organization.

A/NT Gallery serves the Puget Sound area by offering several new exhibits every month, free to the public. We also offer our gallery's space to other cultural organizations in need of an exhibit or event venue.

In its 25 year history, A/NT Gallery has provided support and space to thousands of emerging artists and disadvantaged artists in need of an exhibit space. The gallery offers education and mentoring on business practices, gallery display, art reproduction, and other subjects related to careers in the arts. Since it's are a non-juried space, the gallery doesn't turn away any artists, regardless of ability or background.

What Does Your Name Mean?

Art/Not Terminal used to be in an old bus terminal, which the artists transformed into a gallery. People kept wandering in asking for the bus, and the artists had to tell them they had art, not a bus terminal. Thus, the name stuck: Art/Not Terminal.

Kiaca Galleryimg

North America, USA, OH, Columbus, 937 N High St Columbus Ohio 43215

One of art's best qualities is its ability to bring people together and spark conversation. I whole-heartedly believe this is the idea behind KIACA Gallery. KIACA stands for Kabye Impact African Contemporary Art. Kabye, pronounced kah-bee-yeah, is the name of a West African Togolese ethnic group.

KIACA offers contemporary art by African, African-American, and African Diaspora cultures. The gallery's thrust is the promotion of cultural exchange. You don't go to KIACA just to buy art. You go to gain wisdom. You go to discuss and understand.

Owner Bamazi Talle, who goes by Talle, communicates with the public on various levels, offering visitors a range of interactive experiences including tours, lectures, seminars, studio classes, innovative educational programs, films, concerts, poetry readings, and other performances.

Walking into the gallery, you receive immediate confirmation that you are welcome. Talle is a wonderful host who speaks to visitors sincerely. He insisted on shaking my hand when I walked through the door, proceeded to engage me in deep conversation, and caught me off guard with a bear hug just before I left. A few weeks later, when I saw him on the street, he waved to me and shouted a greeting. I couldn't't believe he remembered my first name. It is obvious that what he does comes from the heart. Art thrives in this environment.

Every two months, KIACA offers a new exhibit, and the schedule is booked through 2012. Artists' demand for space in KIACA Gallery is so high that Talle has projected a long-term goal to open a full-scale museum dedicated to the same standards that hold his non-profit gallery together.

KIACA hosts all kinds of art: sculpture, painting, carved gourds, woven fabrics, and more. KIACA recently wrapped up a fund raising show featuring donated artwork by artists of various cultures. All proceeds from this event were donated to African organizations. Currently in the gallery are works by Gourd Master Sam X. The Gourd Master carves human forms from calabashes. This well-known artist attended the August Gallery Hop and mingled with his fans.

Talle himself is a well-known Columbus artist. His personal work lines the back wall of KIACA. Talle's recent interest has been invested in his life-sized portraits of Columbus' African artists like Ron Anderson and Tariq Tarey. Talle calls these artists "living griots," meaning they are living storytellers, passing on the stories of Africa. These portraits were recently featured at the Columbus Museum of Art.

Whether you're seeking insight into the African psyche, studying the elements of art, or just looking for good conversation, I highly recommend walking in to KIACA Gallery. It is not an experience you will soon forget.

An incredible thing happened during the Folk Art Walking Stick show at the Columbus Museum of Art last year. John Habela, who had recently moved to Columbus, was asked to bring some of his carved sticks to a lecture by curator Michael Hall. I knew on the spot that I wanted to exhibit them, even before I saw his wonderfully obsessive drawings.

In his own words: “Dreamsticks, as I like to call them, are like magical advertising systems, offering protection from evil. They can be both psychological and physical weapons, keeping you balanced and fending off foes”.
